  Antwerp is well known for its diverse cuisine, a town where you can enjoy everything from exotic to Flemish food.

  While in Antwerp, you can taste Flemish specialties, such as stewed eel in chervil sauce, numerous preparations with mussels, and dishes with rabbit or beef stew. Belgian fries with mayonnaise are one of the local favorites and can be found in various chips stands or "frituurs."

    • Brasseries and hotel restaurants - around De Keyserlei
  • Quartier Latin or the theatre district, well known for its
    • Bistros, pubs, terraces in the summer, grand cafes, and brasseries - around Wapper, Hopland, Graanmarkt, Schuttershofstraat, Leopoldstraat
    • Salad bars, snack bars, lunchrooms, and tearooms - around the Wilde Zee shopping zone
  • Historic Center, where you can find
    • Native and exotic restaurants, inns and pubs - around Suikerrui-Hoogstraat, Reyndersstraat, Vlasmarkt, Grote Pieter Potstraat, Ernest Van Dyckkaai, Zirkstraat, Wolstraat
    • Pizza, pasta, mezze, and pita bars - around Oude Koornmarkt, Pelgrimstraat
    • Restaurants placed in attractive squares - around Grote Markt, Groenplaats, Handschoenmarkt, H. Conscienceplein, Lijnwaadmarkt, Veemarkt
  • The Zuid, a modern and trendy neighborhood, also has a large variety of food places
    • native and exotic restaurants that offer vegetarian cuisine, bistros, and pubs - around Vlaamse en Waalse Kaai, Gentplaats, Leopold de Waelplaats

  Antwerp is also known for its delicacies and specialties such as fresh bakeries, sweets, pralines and chocolates, and coffee houses. You might want to try

  • Antwerp Handjes - sand cookies or chocolates with or without marzipan shaped like a hand
  • Antwerp gebak - a sweet between a biscuit and a cake covered with almonds or apricot jam
  • Semini biscuit - a light sweet biscuit with sesame seed and marzipan
  • Roggeverdommeke - a raisin/rye bred
  • Waffles or smoutebollen (dough balls fried in oil) - a favorite snack choice
