Paul E. Bierly III is the Zane Showker Professor of Management and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at James Madison University. He received the B.S. degree from the Wharton School and the B.A.S. degree from the Engineering School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1983. He received the M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Rutgers University, both in organizational management. His dissertation was titled Technological Learning and a Dynamic Capabilities Framework of Competitive Strategy: A Study of the U.S. Pharmaceutical Industry from 1977 to 1991. He was an Assistant Professor at Monmouth University from 1994 to 1998.

From 1983-1988, he was in the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Power Program and served as an Officer on a fast-attack nuclear submarine. From 1988-1990, he worked in manufacturing for Johnson and Johnson, Inc. He conducted research projects for NASA/DOD, the Coast Guard Academy, the FAA and the Internal Revenue Service while working as a consultant with Princeton Economic Research, Inc. His current research is in the areas of the management of technology, knowledge management and strategic alliances. His research has been recently published in Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Executive, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, R&D Management, Scandinavian Journal of Management and several other management journals. He has presented more than 25 papers at major academic conferences. He is a member of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society.
