Dr. Choi Was Invited by KOCSEA

VIENNA, VIRGINIA (September 29, 2008) -- Dr. Choi was invited by KOCSEA (Korean Computer Scientists and Engineers Association in America) to the 9th KOCSEA Technical Symposium which will be held in Vienna, Virginia during October 25-26, 2008.  He will present his recent research work on security.  It was co-organized by KOCSEA, KUSCO (Korean-U.S. Science Cooperation Center), and KSEA (Korean-America Scientists and Engineers Association).

Dr. Choi Invited a Korean Hi-tech Software Company ReegySys to the JMU IIIA Fall 2008 Review Day

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (September 24, 2008) -- Dr. Choi invited a Korean hi-tech software company ReegySys in Seoul.  It is one of top 15 SMEs in Korea selected by Korean government this year.  They will present their state-of-the-art research and development technologies in the area of integrated GIS/DB software at the annual JMU IIIA Fall Review Day on September 26, 2008 at the CISAT.  The title of presentation would be "Homeland Security in Korea based on Integrated GIS Database: The State of the Art."  They will also show simulation demos for the interested audiences and discuss the future cooperative relationship opportunities between JMU IIIA and ReegySys.
 

Dr. Choi Was Invited by ETRI Expert Invitation Program

DAEJEON, KOREA and HARRISONBURGA, VIRGINIA (September 1, 2008) -- Dr. Choi was invited by a leading Korean national research institute ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) in Daedeok Techno Valley by the Expert Invitation Program to introduce his recent research work for the researchers in November 2008.  Established in 1976, ETRI is a non-profit government-funded research organization that has been at the forefront of technological excellence for more than 30 years.  ETRI has successfully developed information technologies such as TDX-Exchange, High Density Semiconductor Microchips, Mini-Super Computer (TiCOM), and Digital Mobile Telecommunication System (CDMA). Especially, ETRI commercialized CDMA technology for the first time in the world with QualComm, Inc. in San Diego, California.  As a recognized leader in the information and telecommunication research institute in Korea, it is considered as one of the best research institutes in the fields of information and telecommunications.
 

Dr. Choi Received the KSEA Dedicated Service Plaque

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (August 16, 2008) -- Dr. Choi received the KSEA (Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association) Dedicated Service Plaque in recognition of his dedicated service as the 36th Publications Director of Executive Committee in the UKC 2008 (US-Korea Conference) which was held during August 14-17, 2008 in San Diego, California. The award was given to recognize his publication work as an Editor-in-Chief of KSEA Letters.  KSEA was founded in 1971 and it is an umbrella organization for the Korean-American scientists and engineers in America.  The UKC 2009 will be held in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina.

Dr. Choi Published a Paper Regarding a Success Story of Amateur Radio Communications with the ISS

VIENNA, VIRGINIA (June 30, 2008) -- Dr. Choi published the following paper with Dr. Yong-Seok Choi of ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute), Korea to the KSEA Letters (Vol. 36, No. 4, June 2008).  Dr. Yong-Seok Choi did his research as a visiting scholar at James Madison University during 2006 by the invitation of Dr. Choi.  The paper can be accessed by surfing the KSEA Letters.

Dr. Choi Received the KSEA Certificate of Appreciation

VIENNA, VIRGINIA (June 28, 2008) -- Dr. Choi received the KSEA (Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association) Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his dedicated and outstanding service as the 36th Publications Director on June 28, 2008 in the Transition Meeting held at the KSEA Headquarter in Vienna, Virginia.  The award was given to recognize his publication work as an Editor-in-Chief for the KSEA Letters Vol. 36, No. 3 by the 36th President Dr. Kwang-Won Wayne Lee of KSEA.  KSEA was founded in 1971 and it is an umbrella organization for the Korean-American scientists and engineers in America.  It hosts the UKC 2008 (US-Korea Conference) during August 14-17, 2008 in San Diego, California. This is the third time to receive the KSEA Certificate of Appreciation for his dedicated and outstanding service as a Publications Director.

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (June 25, 2008) -- Dr. Choi served as a Session Teacher for the Wireless Network Security with Profs. College of Business Telecommunications Lab Introduced in the JMU Madison Magazine

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (Summer 2008) -- The JMU College of Business Telecommunications Lab managed by Dr. Choi and Dr. Harry L. Reif was introduced in the Summer 2008 issue of JMU Madison Magazine.  The lab is mainly used for the lab sessions of the course CIS/CS 320 Telecommunications and Information Processing and other Computer Information Systems courses.

 

Dr. Choi Published a Book Chapter

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (June 6, 2008) -- Dr. Choi was invited to publish the following book chapter with Prof. Jungwoo Ryoo of Penn State Univ. and Dr. Taehwan Oh of Southern Methodist Univ. on the mobile telemedicine.  It was published on June 6, 2008.

Dr. Choi Was Elected as the Technical Group L Councilor of KSEA

VIENNA, VIRGINIA (May 15, 2008) -- Dr. Choi was elected as a Councilor of the KSEA (Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association).  He was elected as one of two the Technical Group L Councilors by the voting of all qualified KSEA members.  He will be in charge of Computer Science and Systems Engineering areas.  He will serve his term during July 2008 - June 2011.

 

Dr. Choi Published His Recent Collaborative Research Work

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (April 16 and May 7, 2008) -- Dr. Choi's recent collaborative research work was accepted by the journals  International Journal of  Mobile Communications and Electronic Government: An International Journal.  His research work  was performed with Prof. Jungwoo Ryoo of Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Taehwan Oh of Southern Methodist University, and Prof. Seungjae Shin of Mississippi State University .  All the research work was done completely using the Internet Telephony (VoIP) groupware SKYPE over the Internet and e-mail exchanges.  More research is going on the latest data communications and telecommunications technologies with the collaborators over the cyberspace.

Dr. Choi Served as the Editor-in-Chief of the KSEA Letters

Dr. Choi Translated the Admission Requirements for Recruiting James Madison University International Students

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (February 1, 2008) -- Dr. Choi was requested to verify the correctness of the document "James Madison University admission requirements for the international students" (제임스메디슨대학교 안내) into Korean by the request of James Madison University Office of International Admissions in the Spring 2008 semester.  He completely revamped the admission requirements document and finally it was posted on the James Madison University web site.  It will be mainly referenced by the Korean applicants, their parents, and academic councilors to help the applicants of Korea in understanding the complex international admission procedures successfully.  This localization in admission process will contribute toward the successful globalization of James Madison University.  The international student admission requirements documents will be translated into other languages in the future.  

 

Dr. Choi Performed a Research Project Supported by ETRI, Korea

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (December 1, 2007) -- ETRI (Electronics Telecommunications Research Institute), which is a global leader in telecom research and development supported Dr. Choi for the project “A Study on the Effects of Mobile Web 2.0 on Telecommunications Market Environment: Social Network Service Oriented” (December 16, 2007-March 31, 2008: $20,000).  Three graduate students worked with him.  He was also awarded the Visiting Scholar Support Fund by James Madison University with the research funding by ETRI, Korea in 2006 ($12,000).

 

Dr. Choi Consulted Korean Hi-Tech Companies at the Korea Tech Preview 2007

DALLAS, TEXAS (October 31 , 2007) -- Dr. Choi was invited by KOTRA(Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) and consulted Korean hi-tech companies with Mr. Dongsik Lee of Sprint at the Korea Tech Preview 2007 during October 31-November 1, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.  The conference was hosted by KOTRA.  He got the chance of meeting Governor of GyeongGi-Do Moon-Soo Kim of Korea and many exhibitors at the convention and did technical consulting for them. 

As an Executive Committee member of KSEA (Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association), he also introduced KSEA to the Korean hi-tech exhibitors and and encouraged them to join.  Many companies including Verizon, at&t, Sprint, COMPUSA, Nokia, and SK Telecom introduced their technologies and future strategies in North American market.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON and HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (March 23, 2007) -- Dr. Choi was invited by the University of Washington for his presentation of "H1-B Visa and Green Card Applications: How?" for the audiences mainly composed of international M.S. and Ph.D. students, Ph.D. degree holders, and the Post-doctorates.  Prof. Sam Chung of the University of Washington - Tacoma invited him and arranged the teleconference for the international scholars in Seattle area suffering from job and immigration issues.  He explained about the procedures about the temporary working visa acquisition and green card filing processes based on his past experience for the audiences on March 23, 2007.

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (August 25, 2006) -- Dr. Choi received James Madison University College of Business Publication Award in Practitioner Category on August 25, 2006.  The award was given to recognize his research work at the luncheon hosted by the College of Business.  $1,000 was given to him for promoting his research work.  The following paper was selected as the best paper in the practitioner category:

Research Paper Published in IEEE Communications Magazine in April 2006

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (March 31, 2006) -- The research work on telemedicine with his students and an external coworker Prof. Kyusuk Chung of Governors State University, Illinois was recently accepted by the IEEE Communications Magazine.  It is a product of strenuous effort of more than one year among interdisciplinary researchers in telecommunications and health care geographically distributed each other.  The research was performed mainly by electronic communications rather than physical communications mechanisms including the Internet and phone calls.

Dr. Choi Appointed as an Editorial Board Member of the IEEE Communications Magazine and the IEEE Communications Survey and Tutorials

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA (August 2, 2005) -- Starting from January 2002, he is working as a faculty member of Department of Computer Information Systems and Management Science (CIS&MS) of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

James Madison University (JMU) is one of the top public universities in the South established in 1908 named after the 4th president of the United States, Mr. James Madison who is known as "the Father of Constitution."

He is teaching mainly two courses: IT 320 (Telecommunications and Information Processing) and COB 204 (Computer Information Systems).  Majority of students are coming from the ISAT (Integrated Science and Technology), Computer Science , and College of Business especially IT&MS (Information Technology and Management Science)Program.  He is developing a new course on Telecommunications Service Management now and also refining the current CIS 320 to improve the quality of course.

He attended the UKC-2002 (The 2002 U.S.-Korea Conference on Science, Technology, and Entrepreneurship) and the WCSE-2002 (The World Congress of Korean and Korean Ethnic Scientists and Engineers-2002) in Seoul, Korea during July 8-13, 2002 and met many scientists and engineers around the world and exchanged useful ideas with them regarding possible joint research opportunities.  Especially he joined the discussions of the Information, Communication and Computer Technology (IT) and Bio-Technology (BT) sessions.   

He visited ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) and Haedong Information & Communications Co., Ltd. in Daejeon and Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea and exchanged ideas on various technical and non-technical issues.  He was introduced to the KOSEN at the UKC-2002 and the WCSE-2002 and joined as a member and the KOSEN appointed him as a technical expert for the technical reports analysis after reviewing his qualification. 

To enrich his research background, he is joining actively in the discussions of the course Informatics for Health Care Professionals offered jointly by the Health Sciences, CISAT (Integrated Science and Technology/Computer Science), Nursing, Social Work, and Information Technology and management Science (IT&MS) Program.  As a service for the JMU, he is serving to help the international students as a mentor of the Center for Multiculcural/International Student Services (CMISS) of the JMU from Fall 2002 semester, an advisor of the Fashion Design Club (FDC) of James Madison University since March 2003.

Since Fall 2003 semester, he is working as an official member of the Informatics Center Steering Committee of James Madison University.   He is involved in the establishment of the Bio & Health Informatics Center in James Madison University and contributing for research section of the center.  

He worked as a Technical Program Committee Member and Paper Reviewer of  the 6th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium (APNOMS 2002).  It was held in Seogwipo KAL Hotel, Jeju Island, Korea during September 25-27, 2002.  Also, he served as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) Member and Paper Reviewer of the IEEE ICCCN 2002 (The 11th International Conference on Computer Communications and Networks) during Oct. 14-16, 2002 in Miami, Florida, USA.

He made two presentations at the AOL/CIT Common Ground conference. This conference, sponsored by Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), was held for AOL staff to give them insight into technological research conducted by Virginian universities. The presentation topics were "An Analysis of Subscriber Complaints Based on Data Mining" and "Toward Traffic Load Balancing of Servers Using GIS Applications." The conference was held in Herndon, Virginia, USA on November 6, 2002.

He attended the 33rd Southeast Decision Sciences Institute (SEDSI) Annual Meeting at the Woodlands Conference Center of Colonial Williamsburg of Virginia during February 26-28, 2003 as a session chair of Data and Information Security [IS8], paper reviewer, discussant, and paper presenter.

Recently, he was invited as a Technical Committee Member of  the 9th IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (NOMS 2004) which was held at the COEX Convention Center in Seoul, Korea during April 19-23, 2004.  Also, he was promoted  to the Full Member of scientific research honorary society, Sigma Xi on March 3, 2003.

He attended the UKC-2003 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California in summer 2003 as a paper presenter and discussant and the IACIS 2003 during October 1-4, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada as a session chair, paper presenter, and discussant.

He has published an article, "Toward Efficient Medication Error Reduction: Error-Reducing Information Management Systems" in the Journal of Medical Systems in December 2003.  The paper provides a starting point for understanding information technologies and database systems supporting technologies like Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), Automated Dispensing System (ADS), and bar coding systems designed to reduce medication errors in hospitals. It was written with Kyusuk Chung of Governors State University and Sangho Moon of Tennessee State University.

He attended the 34th Southeast Decision Sciences Institute (SEDSI) Annual Meeting at the Guest Suites Charleston-Historic District of Charleston, South Carolina during February 25-27, 2004 as a session chair, paper reviewer, discussant, and paper presenter.

The paper "New Trend of GIS Applications in Health Care" was published in the 2004 Business & Health Administration Association [BHAA] Conference, Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, Illinois, March 17 – 19, 2004.

On January 30, 2004 he was selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2004. Who's Who honors a select 5% of America's teachers.  The book (Library of Congress #90662490) will be available in September 2004. 

On March 31, 2004, he was appointed as the Editorial Review Board member of the International Journal on E-Learning, an international peer-reviewed publication of the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) The Association (founded in 1981) is an international, educational and professional not-for profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the knowledge, theory, and quality of learning and teaching at all levels with information technology.

On April 4, 2004, he was appointed as the Associate Technical Editor of the IEEE Communications Magazine Editorial Board during the period of 2004-2005.  It provides timely information on all aspects of communications such as technology, systems, services, market trends, development methods, regulatory and policy issues, and significant global events.  The IEEE Communications Magazine is an official publication of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc).  The IEEE ComSoc is comprised of a diverse group of industry professionals with a common interest in advancing all communications technologies.

He presented the paper " Telecommunications Service Management: Issues and Industry-Academia Cooperation Initiative" at UKC-2004 (The 2004 US-Korea Conference on Science,  Technology, and Entrepreneurship) at Research Triangle Park in Durham, North Carolina during August 12-14, 2004 as a paper presenter, and discussant.

In September 2004, he was appointed as the Editorial Committee Member of ETRI Journal, which is a bimonthly journal published by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Daejeon, Korea. The purpose of this journal is to report and disseminate innovative technologies and knowledge in the fields of information, telecommunications, and electronics.

In September 14, 2004, he was appointed as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) Member (Application Sessions) and Paper Reviewer of the 9th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2005), Nice-Acropolis, Exhibition Hall, Nice, France, May 15-19, 2005. 

He attended the ITERA Planning Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada during October 9-10, 2004 as a representative of James Madison University, and TeleManagement World 2004 in Long Beach, California as a Core Member of the TeleManagement Forum Universities Program (TMF UP).  Dr. Choi initiated the membership of James Madison University to TeleManagement Forum in May 2004 and has been working as a pilot member of TMF UP since the beginning of the TMF UP pilot project in July 2003.  During the period of 1995-2000, he has been working as an active World Ordering Team Technical Member for TeleManagement Forum (formerly, Network Management Forum (NMF)).  He received the Outstanding Contribution Award at the TeleManagement Forum (TMF), Dallas, TX, U.S.A., October 13-15, 1998.  It was awarded by the President and Chief Executive Officer of the TMF in recognition of outstanding contribution, for dedication of time and energy, and for helping the team succeed within the year of 1998.

In December 2004, he was invited to the group of distinguished international scholars on the Editorial Board (2005-2006) of International Journal of Services and Standards (IJSS, ISSN: Print 1740-8849,Online: 1740-8857).  The IJSS is published and distributed by Inderscience Enterprise Ltd The IJSS is published four printed issues per year and the objectives of the journal are to develop, promote and coordinate the development and practice Services and Standards.

During January 3-6, 2005, he attended the Thirty-Eighth Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-38) which was held in Big Island (Hawaii) with his two students Mr. Joshua S. Krause and Kathleen E. Capitan and presented the paper titled "The Applications of Human Factors Associated with Hearing Impairments: Issues and Recent Technological Developments in Telephony" by the support from the College of Business of JMU and Marriott Foundation.  Although it was not verified officially, his student Mr. Krause was named as  the youngest conference attendee and paper presenter as an undergraduate senior student.   

On January 18, 2005, he was appointed as the Editorial Board member of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials.  The IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials is an online journal published by the IEEE Communications Society for tutorials and surveys covering all aspects of the communications field. Telecommunications technology is progressing at a rapid pace, and the IEEE Communications Society is committed to providing researchers and other professionals the information and tools to stay abreast.

On February 16, 2005 he was selected for inclusion in the 9th edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2005 again as an multiple year honoree. Who's Who honors only 5% of America's teachers.  The 9th edition will be published in September 2005. 

In July 2005, he was selected for inclusion in the 23rd (2006) Edition of Marquis Who’sWho in the World.  It honors the most accomplished men and women from around the globe and across all fields of endeavor.
