Economic Education Awards

Teachers within Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, click here for entry information

Virginia teachers from outside Harrisonburg-Rockingham are not eligible for our local competition, but may directly enter state competition. Entry information is available.


Local and state competition can help you be a winner!

Consider the advantages of entering:
  • There are 13 cash prizes at our local level.
  • Lesson plan competition requires only short and easy to assemble entries.
  • An overall achievement in economic education award is now available.
  • All entries go on to state competition, with no local award required.
Innovation in Economic Education Award
  • recognizes teachers on four local levels (K-3, 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12) who create and implement innovative projects that increase economic understanding
  • requires only short entries of 12 pages or less, with 10 page or under supplements
  • no longer necessary to "write a book" or even write out all lesson plans
  • offers local cash prizes: 3rd Place $200 2nd Place $300 1st Place $400 Grand Prize $1000
  • offers state-level cash prizes in two categories (K-5, 6-12)
  • statewide winner receives $1000, statewide runner up receives $500

Steps in Qualifying

  • Register below to request an awards entry packet.
  • Teach an economics lesson or unit during the current school year.
  • Hang on to everything - lesson plans, student work, pictures.
  • Submit your entry in electronic form to www.sveedu.org
  • Print and submit entry with all supporting materials to the JMU Center for Economic Education by June 9, 2008.

New Outstanding Economics Educator Award

  • given for career achievement, not for an individual unit or lesson plan
  • recognizes a teacher who has a sustained history of commitment and contribution to economic education
  • nominations including self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged
  • nominee required to complete a four-page application and submit two letters of support
  • local winner receives $100 cash prize and goes on to state competition
  • statewide winner receives $1000 cash prize
