| TruTTY is a shareware program which allows
a computer sound card to serve as a packet radio TNC. (TruTTY also enables your sound to operate other ham radio modes, such as teletype, PSK31, AMTOR, etc.) TruTTY is a shareware program. You can download it, install it, and try it out for free. If you use it regularly, however, you should register your copy by following the registration instructions found in the program itself. Read the instructions below carefully. To download and install:
When you run TruTTY, the program defaults to RTTY. Go into the Modes menu and change the mode to Packet.
NOTES: The unzipped files will include documentation and operating instructions, along with help files, technical support, and registration information. You should always disable or quit any other program which uses the sound card while you are running TruTTY. In fact, to be safe, on older computers you might even go into your control panel and remove the "system sounds" which Windows uses for opening and closing programs, etc. To receive packet, connect a mono audio cable from your radio's external speaker jack into the microphone input of your sound card. For most radios and most soundcards, you can use a cable with a 1/8" phone plug on each end. These cables can be purchased from Radio Shack for under $3. To send packet, you will need additional cables to go from your soundcard speaker jack to your radio's microphone input jack. Unless your radio operates on VOX, you may also need a serial cable from your computers serial RS-232 port to the PTT connection on your radio's mic connector. An easier way to connect your radio to your sound card is to use one of the connection adapters available from ham radio dealers. One excellent connector which sells for less than $16 is the RASCAL available from Bux (click HERE for more information on the RASCAL.) See page 7 of the March 2003 issue of the MARA/VARA Monitor for more information and for popular packet frequencies in the Shenandoah Valley.
