In the Showker classrooms and Chandler 131, I have installed Document Cameras.  The “Doc Cams” are designed to replace overhead projectors.  You can still use transparencies as well as paper documents, books, and objects.  There is a dry erase board under each that you can use as well.   I am attaching instructions on using the Doc Cams in the classroom as well as a more detailed user guide for those interested.

I have also upgraded the computers and mice.  Please check that all the software you will need for class is installed.  I am running Deep Freeze on the new machines.  That means upon reboot the computers will reset to their original state .  If you install anything that requires a reboot, it will be gone upon reboot.  This is a security measure.

The computers also have easily accessible USB ports up front.

To: COB-FACULTY-STAFF-L@kookaburra1.JMU.EDU

Let’s all do our part for the environment and the JMU electric bill.

Please shut down classroom computers and document cameras in the classrooms when you are finished using them.  The next class does not always use them and if the computer is needed, it boots up quickly (less than two minutes).

Your office machine should also be shut down every evening.  It is not necessary to let it run to download security updates.  That will happen during the day while the computer is idle.

The US PC Energy Report 2007 reveals some staggering findings:

·         Out of 104 million office PCs in the US, at least 31.2 million are left on all night.

·         Turning off every work computer in the United States every night would save as much CO2 emissions as taking every car in the state of Maryland off the road.

·         The simple step of shutting computers down each night can save a 10,000 PC enterprise more than $165,000 a year in energy costs. Across the US, this adds up to more than $1.72 billion dollars and almost 15 million tons of CO2 emissions.

Thank you for your cooperation and contribution to our future.
