1. I'm not happy with my schedule.  What can I do?

You can add/drop a course from August 22-September 2.  September 2 is the deadline to drop a course and add a course without a signature by the instructor or the department head.  Any drops after September 2 will count as a withdrawal.  You can still add a class between September 2 and September 11, but you will need the instructor's or department head's signature.  You need to get my signature for any add/drops.

2. How do I take the Honor Code Test.

You may take the online test anytime from any computer on or off-campus. Go to this website, read the honor code, watch the video and take the test.  The deadline for completing the test is September XX.

3. How can I get help for the Technology Competency Test.

You can get some information about Tech Level I test resources here.  There are also tutorials available here.  Remember you must complete this test by November 14.

4. What courses do I need to take during the Spring semester?

First, you will be automatically enrolled in either one or two (two if you did not take GWRIT 103 in the fall) Cluster 1 courses.

If you are an Economics BBA or Finance BBA major:  By the end of your first year you must complete 5 of the following 6 courses: ECON 201, GECON 200, COB 191, COB 204, COB 218 and MATH 205 or 235.

If you are a QFIN major, take either GECON 200 or ECON 201, MATH 236, COB 241 and one more GENED course besides the one that you are automatically enrolled in.  If you are enrolled in two Cluster 1 courses don't worry about the additional GENED class.

5. I'm failing one or more of my courses.  What do I do?

The first thing you should do is see your professor and see what chance you have of bringing up your grade.  If there is a chance, get help.  I expect that the two courses that will cause the most difficulties are Math and Economics.  You can get help for your MATH class or COB 191 at the Math Tutoring Center.  The Economics department has a list of tutors who will be able to help you with your ECON or GECON courses.

6. What's the difference between a W and a WF or WP?

A W is simply a withdrawal from a course.  You must withdraw from a course by October 25,

If you miss the withdrawal deadline you can ask your professor to give you a WP - withdraw passing - or a WF - withdraw failing.  These are given at the discretion of the professor, and many will not unless there are extenuating circumstances (I provided the link just in case).

Although a W, WP and WF appear on your transcript they will not be used to calculate your GPA.

7. When do I have to complete my first year COB courses?

This sound like a silly question but it's not.  To be able to continue with your COB courses you need to complete 5 of the following 6 courses - ECON 201, GECON 200, MATH 205, COB 191, COB 204, COB 218 - by the end of summer school.  This would help those of you who fail a course during fall or spring and need to retake it over the summer.

8. What GPA do I need to continue with the business major?

You need an overall GPA of 2.5 by the end of your first year to continue on with your second year courses.  For those of you who are mathematically challenged that means for every C you get in one course you will need to get at least a B in another course.  To be formally admitted to the COB at the end of your second year you need at a minimum an overall GPA of 2.8.

9. I don't like you as an advisor.  Can I get another one?

Not a chance.  Like it or not you're stuck with me.  You think all of you give me a warm and fuzzy feeling?

10. I have another question.

I will do my best to answer it.  Come by my office or e-mail me: heapps@jmu.edu .
