Newly Certified Managers Share Their Thoughts on CM Certification

Search the Internet and you will find that much has been written about the "value of certification".   However, there is no better source than ICPM's own CM certificants when it comes to describing the personal and professional value of certification.  Accordingly, ICPM surveyed a select group of 2009 certificants who shared these thoughts about their recent certification experience:

What value did you derive from preparing to take the CM exams?

  • I derived a broad sense of my role as a manager and an appreciation of the variety of challenges managers must be able to address. (William Seegars, CM, Command Master Chief, U.S. Navy)

  • I obtained an understanding of the different behavioral types that comprise the workforce and how to effectively manage each type by appealing to their unique differences. (Stephanie Slezycki, CM, Engineer, General Dynamics Electric Boat)

  • I gained exposure to a diverse array of management philosophies and practices, from which I can choose the one(s) that best fit my management style or a given situation (Saeed Bawazeer, CM, Al-Talayi, Saudi Arabia)

  • I was able to fill in the blanks on areas of management that I had not been exposed or had not received previous training (James Randolph, CM, Industrial Engineer, Gulfstream)

  • By engaging in interactive group discussions with CM applicants from my company, I benefited from learning about different management perspectives and experiences (Kathleen Conway, Manager IT Security, Certification and Accreditation, United Space Alliance)

  • It was a valuable refresher that helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses with regard to managerial best practices.  (Marcus W. Hervey, CM, Deputy Department Head, U.S. Air Force)

  • As I read through the books, I thought of ways to apply the concepts in the workplace.  Most of what I read could be applied immediately and it helped me look at new ways to approach common management challenges. This “out of the box” thinking helped me deliver better results on projects, build empowered teams, and understand the importance of providing feedback and recognition to individuals and teams. (Jason Orloske, CM, Project Manager, Red Wing Shoe Company)

What was the most challenging aspect of getting CM certified?

Most CM applicants cited time management as the most challenging aspect of getting CM certified.  Balancing work, life, and education requires dedication and commitment.  New priorities have to be set and opportunities foregone to free up the time to prepare to take the CM exams. Other challenges cited included:

  • Making valuable connections between course content and workplace scenarios

  • Speaking in a group and organizing thoughts for a meaningful exchange of ideas

  • Replacing old management practices with new ones learned in the CM program

How did the CM certification process help you to become a better manager?

  • It opened my mind to alternative ways to achieve organizational goals and positive outcomes. (Clint Bain, CM, Chief Building Manager, Grand Bahama Port Authority)

  • It exposed areas that needed improvement in my management style. (Nabil Issa, CM, Managing Director, NP Aerospace Jordan)

  • It validated management practices I currently use and reinforced some I had forgotten. (Deborah Miller, CM, Assistant to the Director, Port of Seattle)

  • It clarified that leadership behavior is important but one must equally demonstrate strong managerial acumen to be an effective manager.  (James Warren, CM, Manager, United Space Alliance)

  • It made me a more complete leader by filling in the blanks when it came to supervising different personality types (Karen Pirella, CM, Blue Cross Northern Pennsylvania)

  • It improved my understanding of other person’s points of view and helped me realize the importance of being a good listener. (Arthur Warren, CM, Senior Electrical Systems Engineer, Port of Seattle)

  • Exposure to different ideas, processes, cases and management practices was an eye opener for gaining new insights and perspectives. (Sue Mariotti, CM, Branch Manager, BECU)

What value doe CM certification have for you?

  • I am a more empowered leader and manager because I understand and am able to apply fundamental management and leadership principles. (William Seegars, CM, Command Master Chief, US Navy)

  • Upon obtaining CM certification, people look at you more seriously as a leader.  When you can provide them with knowledgeable answers to management questions, it fortifies their confidence in you.  Senior management sees CM certification as a commitment to educate yourself and others, which makes you a more desirable candidate for future promotion. (James Rudolph, CM, Industrial Engineer III, Gulfstream)

  • It demonstrated my capabilities and commitment to professional development to senior management, where they have shown their appreciation and satisfaction. (Bader Al-Bader, CM, Assistant Manager, Triple E Holding Company)

  • Other managers and employees think more highly of you; you have earned respect. (Julie Bard, CM, Engineering Process Writer II, Gulfstream)

  • It provides access to the CM community for continuous interaction. (Bill Miller, CM, Applications + Systems Development Analyst, Gulfstream)

  • It set me apart from my peers in the military as the CM achievement was not expected at my rank or pay grade. (Ron Melvin, CM, Chief petty Officer, US Navy)

What is the incentive to recertify annually to maintain current CM status?

  • To keep my management and leadership skills up to date

  • To receive continuing professional recognition and respect

  • To maintain access to the network of CM certified professionals

  • CM is an accountability partner to keep learning and growing to achieve success

**  ICPM extends its thanks and appreciation to the Certified Managers that responded to this survey.

Who's Who Among Certified Managers

The following short stories were written by Certified Managers for Certified Managers.

Dr. Gary A. Mattison, PhD, CM

Online Professor, Strayer University

Fredericksburg, Virginia

"Any faculty member who is teaching in the business curriculum should consider becoming CM certified.”  That was the first time I had heard of CM certification. One of our full-time professors at Strayer University had taken and passed the CM exams. He considered CM to be one of the best knowledge validation exams for professors who were teaching, or wanted to teach, in our business curriculum.

I applied to the program out of curiosity, and if for no other reason than to obtain the material and assess the program myself. I was duly impressed with the study material. I saw a direct applicability to my job as a professor. CM training appeared to be an excellent review of similar knowledge I had gained in the U.S. Army, in my undergraduate degree, and in graduate studies. Moreover, having just left the Army, I felt that I needed to validate my skills in management, behavioral, systems sciences now that I was in my new environment: the ‘civilian world.’ There was an added incentive. I was told at that time, CM certification meant we would get paid the same as a PhD.

Studying for the exams was not easy. It took time that I really felt I did not have. Nonetheless, I went through every page of each study guide. When exam time came, I finished all three exams on the same day.

Soon thereafter, I was appointed as Campus Dean for Strayer University. As I completed daily requirements, I realized that CM was more than a certification; it had given me insights to my new ‘applied learning lab.’ Situations arose that presented a dilemma as challenging as any scenario I had seen in the CM exams. My boss was very pleased with my performance, so much so that I became the Campus Dean at four more campuses, two of which I opened.

The CM designation continues to mean a lot to me, to the students, and to the administration. In fact, those of us who have earned the certification now have “CM” after our list of degrees in our catalog. Teaching does indeed demand a skill set similar to that of any manager.

Three years ago, I was honored by being the first elected Faculty Senate President in our University’s history. I believe wholeheartedly that CM certification had a part in that. Yet I am not alone. There are many in our organization who are CM certified. We share a special common bond, each of us knowing the capabilities of our fellow faculty and staff members. Therefore, I continue to refer Business and Management Information Systems students and faculty to the CM Website. I am pleased to publicize and share the benefits of certification to all energetic, knowledgeable individuals with whom I meet.

Divine Intervention -- While employed at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, I decided to become a Certified  Manager though the Fort Worth Chapter of the National Management Association.  I felt this would benefit me in my career.  I cannot say that I knew exactly how it would benefit me, but I knew it wouldn’t hurt to have the knowledge the CM certification offered.

In preparation for the exams, there were three courses that were offered through the Management Association.  Because of my work schedule, I was only able to enroll in two of the courses.

As the exam date approached, I started getting a bit nervous thinking about the six-hour exam that was required before I could become a Certified Manager.  I studied and outlined the material I had available through my classes.  As for the third class that I did not take, I prayed and told the Lord that He would have to really help me in passing that portion of the exam.

On Friday, prior to the exam date on Saturday, I decided to take a day off from work in order to study. Around 7:30 a.m. I left home to take my daughter, Tenea to school.  During that time, I was actively involved in the Clean City Commission in our town of Forest Hill, Texas.

As I backed out of the garage and started toward the main road that runs through the city, I noticed something lying in the middle of the street.  My immediate response was, “I know somebody threw that trash in the middle of the street!”  I stopped the car and told my daughter to pick it up.  When she got back in the car, she handed the item to me.  I didn’t take the time to look at it because about a half block from the location of the first item was something else lying in the street.

Being the avid clean city person that I was, I had her pick the second item up, also.  Both items turned out to be books that had been battered and run over by traffic.  I didn’t get a chance to look at both of the books until after I had dropped my daughter off at school.

It sent chills through my body when I finally looked at the books and saw the titles.  One was entitled Coaching Skills for the Manager and the other was Supervisory Skills.   On the outside of each book was a sticker that read, “Alcon Library – DO NOT REMOVE”.  Even more surprising to me was when I opened each book, I found a pre-test, a study guide, and a post test.

God answered my prayers in a very tangible and awesome way.

Edward Schwier, CM

CH2MHill

Richland, WA

I came to the Department of Energy Hanford Site in 1996 as part of the tram led by Fluor to work on clean-up of the 576 square mile former nuclear production complex in the 'desert' of Washington State.  I had a successful military career with vast amounts of management and leadership experience; however, this second career presented different challenges.  I was new to the area and a geographic bachelor.  I quickly became involved with the new Hanford NMA Chapter that emerged out of two chapters sponsored by outgoing contractors.  As a life-long learner and teacher, I gravitated to professional development and discovered the CM Program.  I quickly determined that I wanted to pursue certification, for myself, not because it was a job requirement or an expectation.

The Chapter had an established process to support those pursuing CM certification.  An after work study group, usually self-facilitated, discussed two chapters from the study manuals each week. Throw in several review sessions and in less than 20 weeks we were ready to take the three CM exams, hand written, in one six hour session.  The group learned the most from discussing principles covered in the three manuals and sharing experiences.  We coached and mentored each other, focusing on success for all.  The Chapter had a 100% pass rate in the past, so we felt some pressure to succeed.

I enjoyed the experience so much that I volunteered to be the CM Director for the Chapter and served in that position for many years, coordinating work groups, occasionally facilitating sessions, and expanding the pool of CMs.  I worked with the Energy Northwest and Tri-City Area Professional Employees Chapters of NMA to conduct joint study groups.  Today, the CM Program is still going strong and NMA Chapter #395 continues to have a 100% success rate.

What difference has achieving the CM certification made in the careers of managers and in the culture of the Mid-Columbia Basin?  On the negative side, I have yet to see a job posting that states "CM certification desired/required".  On the positive side, it has expanded our base of knowledge and CMs are notorious for their energy in volunteering to help others and to address problems beyond their own sphere of influence.  They are a vital resource that is called upon to help address management issues that require leadership skills to resolve.  Talking to those who have been CMs for some time and to newly Certified Managers, I consistently hear "I did this for myself" as the answer to what motivated them to pursue certification.

Executive Director

From the ICPM Executive Director

As 2009 winds to a close, most individuals will look back and be glad that the year is over. It’s been tough sledding for everyone. Some have likened it to pushing a rope uphill. There have been dramatic shifts in markets and both corporations and individuals have scrambled to survive and position themselves for the future. Looking ahead to 2010, there are faint glimmers of optimism on the horizon. The worst of global recession appears to be over, and there are early signs of improvement. Corporate performance, measured by quarterly earnings, has largely met and exceeded conservative expectations.

In tough economic times, the value of your Certified Manager (CM) certification is more valuable than ever. Certificants around the world know the value of CM certification and work hard to earn it and retain it. Encourage others to follow your lead.

In the coming weeks you will experience a revised ICPM web site and CM portal. You will be able to update your CM record and interact with ICPM and other CMs in improved ways. The ICPM staff has worked hard to research the best approach for this change, devoting many hours to reviewing and assessing the best providers. We’re excited about this CM benefit and hope you will be as well.

ICPM continues its partnership with NMA … THE Leadership Development Organization. Earlier this fall, ICPM’s Board of Regents met in conjunction with the NMA Annual Conference in Partnership with ICPM and two Regents presented education sessions as part of the conference program. This partnership dates back to the founding of ICPM in 1974, and we’re proud to continue to work collaboratively with NMA and its members.

I wish you all the best for the remainder of 2009 and for a successful 2010.

Robert Uda, CM,

Chairman of the Board

From the ICPM Board of Regents

Reflections from the Chairman

I am pleased and honored to serve as chairman of the ICPM Board or Regents for 2009-2011. Because of the recession, many organizations are deeply in debt and struggling to survive. However, college, training, and certification enrollments tend to increase during this time as workers seek additional education and professional credentials to remain marketable. Accordingly, interest in CM certification remains strong and ICPM is financially healthy and thriving!

In fact, in 2009, ICPM had a record number of CM exams taken and international exam growth posted an 84% increase over the prior year. An extensive PR campaign of press releases and media coverage enhanced CM brand recognition and drove new customers from around the globe to the ICPM website to learn more about CM certification. Furthermore, in 2010, ICPM will seek accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) as part of its continuing commitment to delivering quality certification.

These are interesting times, and I am excited about the opportunity to represent Certified Managers worldwide and lead ICPM into 2010 and beyond.

ICPM Introduces a Revised Recertification Program for 2010

January marks the month when CMs and C.A.M.s are required to recertify in order to keep their certifications current and continue to use the CM and/or C.A.M. professional credential(s).  For 2010, ICPM will be introducing a "revised" recertification program with improvements to the recertification process and revisions to recertification requirements.  In conjunction with ICPM's new online community and website, 2010 recertification will be completed entirely online.  The 4-part, online recertification process will entail:

1.  Affirming your intent to abide by the “CM Credential Use Statement”

2.  Reaffirming your intent to abide by the ICPM Code of Ethics

3.  Paying a $50 professional fee by credit card or check no later than February 28, 2010

4.  Self recording 4 professional development activities, as completed, throughout 2010

When, Where & How?  In mid-January, a recertification notice will be emailed to all CMs/C.A.M.s certified as of 12/31/2009. (CM applicants are not subject to recertification until they are CM certified.)  The notice will instruct certificants when, where, and how to recertify online.  Certificants without an active email address will receive a mailed notice directing them to the online recertification site.  Retired CMs will not be required to recertify, as long as their CM record reflects "retired status" and they are not working or consulting in a managerial capacity.

What is the 2010 Professional Development (PD) Requirement?

Certificants are required to complete four (4) PD activities during the 2010 year in accordance with the table below. A minimum of one activity must be completed in each of the three categories (i.e. coursework, self development, and leadership) and two activities must be complete in one category.  Time expended in an individual activity is not relevant, provided the results are meaningful to the certificant. Additionally:

  • The PD requirement is based on actual activities completed throughout 2010.

  • Eligible PD activities must develop business, management or leadership skills.

  • 4 PD activities must be self recorded online by 12/31/2010 to meet the PD requirement.

  • Random audits by ICPM staff will be conducted at year end to verify individual compliance.
