I understand that this internship is designed to give me an experiential,
real world experience in the workplace that I cannot learn in class. JMU
values such experiential learning.
My internship must be marketing-related. Marketing is pretty broad, but
some jobs do not fit the description. If I am going to do filing and run the
copy machine, or if I interact with customers as a simple clerk, cashier, or
waiter/waitress, I won’t get credit for an internship.
I understand that I must apply online for approval of my internship, and
that it is Dr. Shelton who must approve my internship. Some internships for
various reasons are not acceptable. If she does not approve the internship, I
may not register for the class. After I apply online, I understand that I will
receive the course index number and may then register for the class. If,
somehow, I register without her approval, I will not get credit for the
course, and I will not get a refund.
I understand that I must work at least 250 hours to get credit for this
course. This is a little more than six weeks of fulltime work.
I have read the MKTG 494 course syllabus. I understand that I will need to
communicate with my advisor during the course of my internship. The syllabus
clearly states that I must send my advisor three e-mail or regular mail
messages over the course of the semester. Phone calls do not count toward this
total. I understand that I do this so I can maintain a connection with JMU and
provide my advisor with a written record of my progress. Further, I understand
that each one of these messages is worth 10% of my grade, and that if I do not
communicate with my advisor, the highest grade I can possibly earn is a C-.
I will schedule and complete an exit interview with my advisor early in
fall semester.
I understand that I must write a report, following the guidelines laid out
in the syllabus, and turn it in by the deadline specified in the syllabus
I realize that, because of the nature of the class, I will get an
incomplete grade (“I”) on my summer report card. I know my advisor will submit
a change of grade form sometime before the deadline (usually the first week in
November). I understand that I cannot count on credit for the summer
internship being completed before fall registration begins. All I am assured
of is that the grades will be submitted before the incomplete removal deadline
arrives.
