Course
Overview/Goals:
The purpose of this class is to give a broad overview of information
systems in business today.
Course
Objectives: Upon completing this course, students will:
-
Understand
information system concepts including input, processing, and output,
data and information.

Understand
information system components including hardware, software, databases
and telecommunications. Understand how one would select computer
hardware, computer software, and database software.

Understand the role
of information systems in organizations.

Identify and define
the major types of information systems
-
Exhibit an
understanding of the ethical and social impact of information systems.
-
Understand how
businesses use the Internet, E-commerce, the World Wide Web, Intranets
and Extranets.

Describe the
activities that take place during each phase of the systems development
life cycle and understand alternative system building approaches
-
Understand the
cultural, political, geographic and economic challenges that confront
the management of global information technology.

Use common personal
productivity tools.
-
Create a database
using a relational DBMS such as Access. Demonstrate the ability to
create reports, queries and join two tables in the DBMS.
-
Use the Internet to
conduct research, find information, and communicate.
-
Create a personal
web page.
