AWARD WINNING ARTICLES
Published in the Management Accounting or Strategic Finance Monthly Magazine
Currently the IMA has two publications: Strategic Finance and Management Accountant Quarterly. Previously, the Management Accounting magazine (formerly the IMAs leading professional journal) received hundreds of manuscripts each yearfor consideration for publication. The three best manuscripts each year were recognized with Lybrand medals being awarded to their authors (Gold, Silver, and Bronze). Twenty-five Certificates of Merit were also awarded to authors for outstanding contributions to accounting literature published (in full or digest form) in Management Accounting. The Virginia Skyline chapter has the fortune of geography to be the home chapter for a number of scholars from outstanding institutions of higher education. Many of our own chapter members have written manuscripts for consideration of publication in the Management Accounting magazine. IMA ACCREDITED CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
CMA/CFM Exam Procedures
The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) established the Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) in 1972 to implement and administer the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Program and in 1996 the Certified in Financial Management (CFM) Program. The ICMA evaluates the credentials of candidates, administers the examination, grants certificates, and ensures that CMAs and CFMs continue to meet the professional requirements necessary to retain their certificates in good standing. The ICMA is governed by the ICMA Board of Regents.
Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Program
The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation for management accounting professionals provides members with a globally known recognition as a certified professional. The goal of the CMA Program is to foster the development of management accountants who have a strong technical background in accounting and finance, who can anticipate the needs of their organization, and who participate in the decision-making process as an integral member of the management team.
The CMA Examination is a comprehensive, four-part exam covering topics important to the effective practice of management accounting, including standards of ethical conduct. One part of the examination is waived for individuals who have passed the U.S. CPA exam. All parts of the CMA Examination are offered in a computer-based format on demand. The ICMA Program at IMA in Montvale, New Jersey, administers the program; Sylvan Testing Centers administers the examination. Parts of the exam may be taken separately. All parts of the CMA exam must be passed within a three-year period. For more information , call the National office of IMA (1-800-638-4427, extension 156).
Certified in Financial Management (CFM) Program
The Certified in Financial Management (CFM) Program was launched in December 1996. The CFM Program was designed to be of interest to a broad range of financial management professionals including current CMAs who wish to broaden their certification, personnel within the corporate finance organization (treasury, planning, analysis), finance educators, and students.
The CFM Examination is a comprehensive, four-part exam, which includes three of the examination parts used for the CMA Examination. The fourth part is devoted to in-depth testing of corporate financial management topics. These topics will include financial markets and instruments, risk management, corporate restructuring, financial statement analysis, and investor relations. CMAs in good standing with respect to continuing education and IMA dues need only pass the new Part 2.
