Q. When will I register for spring semester courses?
A. The majority of freshmen will register for the 2003 spring semester
during November 12-18. Individual dates are based according to the number of
credit hours earned prior to the 2002 fall semester. Some students will have
advance registration at an earlier time due to practice schedules or needed
accommodations. Students will be given a 48 hour initial time period in which to
register. Course adjustments can be made following the registration period
through December 20. The web system will be closed over the Thanksgiving break.
Check e-campus to view your specific registration appointment time.
Q. Where can I get assistance in the planning of my schedule of classes?
A. Your Academic Advisor can assist you with course selection. For those
who are undeclared, Academic Advising and Career Development will see students
on a walk-in basis during the month of November through the registration period.
A sign-in sheet will be located on the reception desk in Wilson 301. If you are
declared, contact your major advisor for assistance in your major department.
Q. Can I register for a course as credit/no credit?
A. Students are only eligible to take a course on a credit/no credit
basis if they have at least 28 credit hours earned and a 2.25 cumulative GPA.
Therefore, most freshmen are ineligible. Courses which may NOT be taken as
credit/no credit include general education, major, minor, and degree
requirements. All required courses must be taken for a grade.
Q. How do I compute my grade point average?
A. To calculate your GPA, divide the quality points earned by the number
of credit hours attempted. For assistance, there is a GPA calculator on the
Academic Advising and Career Development web site at the following address: http://www.jmu.edu/career.
Click on the Academic Advising Help section. Additionally, refer to page 21 in
your Undergraduate Catalog for the chart of JMU’s grading system.
Q. What happens if I have not successfully completed the Tech Level I tests?
A. A hold will be placed on your record if you do not achieve the required score on each of the three Tech Level I components including word processing (MS Word), presentation software (MS PowerPoint), and spreadsheet software (MS Excel). The deadline for completion is December 6. Tutorials are available to assist and prepare you for these exams on the General Education website at http://www.jmu.edu/gened/techcomp.html. If you have questions about Tech Level I requirements, contact the Technology Coordinator, Catherine Mahoney, at x82508 or mahonect@jmu.edu, the General Education office at x82852, or e-mail tech-one@jmu.edu. The tests are administered in Ashby Hall Computer Lab, Room L7.
