| domains Every web page
has a URL, a 'universal resource locator', appearing
in the address field near the top of of our browser window. The
URL contains a domain name identifying the site we're
on. Domain
names are as important as brand names and, in fact, should
be regarded and managed as such. So we need to
exercise care in considering and selecting the possibilities. The
name or names we choose must also be legally available. When
we identify some good ones that are legally available,
we need to register them to secure the legal right to
their exclusive use for our site only. This exercise
is about understanding these issues and selecting five for use with your project site.

We should regard domain names as brand names. A lot of attention is given to brand name management, and respected brand names are fiercely protected. Click here for some examples. Read to discover when branding seems to matter and when it doesn't. We've used howstuffworks previously. We're using it again now. Visit How Domain Servers Work. We're interested in understanding 'IP Addresses' and 'Domain Names'. |
exercise 6 Your task for this exercise is to come up with five domain names for your project site that satisfy as much as possible the criteria for a good domain name we've reviewed. In the process of doing this, your second task is to determine if the preferred names are legally available to register and use. When you have five legally available domain names that could be registered, create a web page using Dreamweaver and put it to your account on the studnet.jmu.edu server. Save this page with the file name 'domainames'. The content of this page is a bullet point (unordered) list of your five domain names. Also: Include the names of the two domain name registrar you used in case I want to verify that the names you've selected are legally available. Do a search for 'domain name registration service'. You'll discover there are a lot of service providers. Pick two and check their databases to learn if the domain names you want to use are available for registration. I want your compare the results of two providers to test for identical outcomes. For our pruposes it doesn't matter which two providers you use for your domain name search. As an FYI asiade: GoDaddy.com is well know because it's done a lot of advertising. This is exercise 6 due NLT Th.27.Sep by 2100 hrs when I'll begin visiting these pages for the FINAL score. This is exercise is worth 27 point.
